LET US QUIT!

The government of Canada is moving ahead with restricting our access to alternative products to cigarettes such as vapes, patches, sprays and pouches that help us quit smoking! They plan to limit our access and ban flavours.

And they are doing all of this without consulting consumers!

If you think the government should consult consumers before making it harder to quit smoking, join us in the fight for your rights and sign up now!

How to Quit

There are few safe and regulated ways to quit.

According to Health Canada, nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is an over-the-counter medication that delivers nicotine to your body in small amounts and can help you control cravings.

These alternatives come in limited forms:

01

Nicotine gums, inhalers, lozenges, pouches

  • la colle

    There are different forms of short-acting NRT including nicotine gums, sprays, inhalers, and lozenges. While patches deliver a steady amount of nicotine to your body throughout the day, these short-acting forms of NRT are intended to help you control your cravings as they appear. For example, if you feel like smoking, you could use nicotine gum to help the craving pass. These short-acting NRT products can be used alone or in combination with nicotine patches.

  • Quit-Club_Nicotine_pouches

    Health Canada has recently authorized a new short-acting NRT called nicotine pouches. A nicotine pouch is a tobacco-free product that is placed between your gum and your cheek. It delivers nicotine to your body temporarily relieving cravings and symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. Only some nicotine pouches have been authorized by Health Canada as natural health products for smoking cessation. Do not use unauthorized nicotine pouches, as they can pose risks to your health.

Nicotine patches

Nicotine patches are the only available form of long-acting NRT. Long-acting means that patches deliver a steady dose of nicotine as long as you keep it on for up to 24 hours. Typically, you would apply a patch in the morning when you wake up, wear it all day and night, and replace it with a new one the next morning.

How does it work?

Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) can help with the difficult withdrawal symptoms and cravings that most people say is their only reason for not giving up tobacco. Using NRT reduces those symptoms.

Many people can quit tobacco without using NRT, but most of those who attempt quitting do not succeed on the first try. In fact, people trying to quit usually need many tries before they’re able to quit for good. Most people who try to quit on their own go back to smoking within the first month of quitting – often because of the withdrawal symptoms. But the good news is that many do succeed. In fact, there are now more people who formerly smoked than people who currently smoke!

Together with counseling or other support, NRT may help increase the number of smokeless tobacco users who quit, too.

Quitting smoking is extremely difficult. The more options we have, the better. Whether we use vapes, gum, pouches, or patches, we can quit—for good—if we have access.

How does it make sense that you can buy cigarettes on every corner but not products to help you quit?

Sweden, New Zealand and the UK have shown that a harm reduction approach works.

They didn’t eliminate smoking by making everything illegal or harder to access — they did it by making safer alternatives more accessible.

''I smoked on and off for years and finally quit using Champix. Despite quitting, I still feel the urge to smoke sometimes like when out with smokers or when feeling stressed. I appreciate the variety of alternatives available, like vaping, gums, patches, and tools like pouches. These options have been crucial in helping me resist the temptation to smoke cigarettes in certain situations where I felt weak, providing the support needed to maintain a smoke-free lifestyle. They offer different ways to manage cravings and ease the transition away from smoking.''

''I used to smoke cigarettes for several years, and once I tried quitting I found myself wanting a safer alternative. I had tried to quit before using regular gum or candy, but didn't have success. Once I found alternatives like nicotine gum, pouches, and vaping, I was able to quit cigarettes for good and haven't had one in several years, even when cravings strike. It can be difficult to navigate the social aspects as well as the physical urge to smoke. That is why I appreciate the availability of options like these, which make it easier to maintain a healthier lifestyle and make better choices.  ''

''I was doing a lot of driving throughout Canada delivering for a company in Indiana. I was a heavy smoker, and I knew I had to quit. While driving on one long haul route, I lit a cigarette and it burned out without even taking a puff. I thought to myself that smoking was a waste of money and I was coughing a lot and knew it was bad for my health. One early morning while getting ready to leave Indiana, I decided to leave my cigarettes in the hotel. I made it home 5 days later and started to crave cigarettes so I bought myself a vape, starting with 14 mg of nicotine and reduced the amount over time down to zero. I still vape but it's not a steady thing. If I didn’t have that vape, I’d be in rough shape today, there’s no doubt about it.''

''I quit smoking on May 3th, 2017. I started vaping about a month before that. I just kept vaping more each day as I cut down on my cigarettes. I was going out west to visit my daughter and planned to quit while I was out there, away from all my smoking friends. But I actually quit 2 weeks before I went out! The vape was tasting so much better than the terrible taste of the cigarettes. I vaped different flavors and kept cutting down my nicotine until 3 years later I was vaping with zero nicotine. I just kept on cutting down on the vaping after I knew I would never want a cigarette again. I have been vape-free for the last 3 years. I am really enjoying the freedom and, of course, my health.''

''I smoked for years and wasn't able to quit until I discovered nicotine pouches. They work like a charm and don't leave me breathless or smelling like an ashtray. Why these products can't be sold at corner stores and gas stations is beyond me. I'm from a rural area and it’s not easy to travel all the way to a pharmacy. It makes no sense.''

What about vaping?

Vaping is not technically considered a nicotine replacement therapy, but many smokers have used various vapes to quit.

According to Health Canada, there are two forms of nicotine commonly used in vaping liquids: freebase nicotine and nicotine salts.

Quit Club in the News

Send this open letter to Minister Michel now & join us in the fight for your rights!

Dear Minister Michel,

Congratulations on your appointment as Canada’s Minister of Health!

We’re writing to you not as experts or lobbyists, but as people who have lived through the long, lonely fight to quit smoking.

Some of us have tried a dozen times or more. We’ve struggled through cravings, withdrawal, social pressure, and the grief of giving up something that, for years, felt like part of us. For many of us, it was nicotine pouches that finally made quitting possible. These products gave us a way out.

Then, without warning, they were taken away.

The previous government banned the sale of nicotine pouches in convenience stores and gas stations across Canada—the same places smokers buy cigarettes. The decision was made with no public consultation, no support for those affected, and little regard for the real-world consequences.

Cigarettes are still sold at every corner store, but the products that helped us walk away from them are now restricted to pharmacies. This makes it much more challenging to buy nicotine pouches when a craving hits. It makes no sense for cigarettes to be easier to obtain than the thing we use to quit smoking.

This honestly feels more like punishment than policy.

Minister Michel, the Government of Canada wants to reduce smoking in Canada to below 5% by 2035. To get there, we need more options, not fewer.

We’re calling on you to:

  1. Launch a National Kick the Nic Strategy, to give smokers and ex-smokers a voice in supporting more Canadians to quit using safer alternatives

  2. Create a federal Help Me Quit Fund, to help low income people afford nicotine replacement therapy

  3. Restore access to nicotine pouches in convenience stores and gas stations, with strong rules to keep them out of the hands of youth

We’re asking for a seat at the table and a policy that puts people first. We hope you understand!

Sincerely,

Quit Club

On behalf of millions of Canadians trying to stay smoke-free

Petition to the Government of Canada

Let Adults Access the Products That Help Them Quit Smoking

We, the undersigned, call on the Government of Canada to reverse the Ministerial Order that banned the sale of nicotine pouches in convenience stores and to restore access to these products for adult smokers who are trying to quit.

Whereas:

  • Thousands of Canadians have used nicotine pouches to quit smoking—but the federal government has removed them from the very places where adult smokers shop, like convenience stores;

  • For many people, especially in rural or lower-income communities, the corner store is the most accessible place to get everyday items—including safer alternatives to smoking;

  • Convenience store workers are already trained and required to check ID for age-restricted products like cigarettes and alcohol;

  • There’s no clear evidence that youth were accessing nicotine pouches from convenience stores, while unregulated and unauthorized products are widely available online;

  • Banning these products from stores didn’t make cigarettes harder to get—it only made quitting harder; and

  • The current policy creates unfair barriers and ignores the needs of adults who want to make a healthier choice.

Therefore, we call on the Government of Canada to:

Immediately restore access to authorized, adult-only nicotine pouches in convenience stores—so that people trying to quit smoking can choose safer options, close to home.

This is your Testimonial quote. Give your customers the stage to tell the world how great you are!

Who are we?

I started smoking when I was 16. Like a lot of people, I thought it was just something social. It was a pack here and there with friends, often after a drink. I didn’t think I smoked enough to be addicted, but that’s exactly how addiction works. You don’t realize it’s a problem until it’s dug in deep.

Over the years, I quit and relapsed more times than I can count. Cold turkey, Champix, yoga, and meditation. Each time, I told myself, this time it’s for good. And each time, a moment of stress, a drink with a friend, or even just a bad day would send me back to the convenience store for a pack.

What finally helped me break the cycle were smokeless nicotine alternatives, specifically nicotine pouches and a vape. The pouches were discreet, easy to carry, and available when I needed them.

So, when I heard that the government was making these products harder to access, restricting nicotine pouches to pharmacies, and adding more limitations on vapes, I was stunned. At the same time, alcohol and cigarettes, the most harmful products, are available at nearly every corner store in the country. How does that make any sense?

That’s when I decided to speak up. I started tweeting. At first, it was just me. Then others started sharing their stories. We formed a small online community and we called ourselves Quit Club!

We can end smoking in Canada if the government stops stepping on our rights and limiting our choice in how we improve our wellbeing.
